May Day

Helsinki Collage

Happy Vappu to all my Finnish friends!  And Happy May Day to the rest of the world!

I don't normally celebrate May Day but the last time I did I was in Finland and had such a blast!!  In my part of the world May 1st is just another day, but every time it rolls around I always smile at the wonderful memories of the time it meant something (or at least smile at what I do remember of that day!).  Ahhh...memory lane...

Whilst I won't be partying it up until the wee hours of the morning or getting completely smashed, I will have a beer or two tonight to celebrate in my own way.

Happy Vappu!

  1. Happy May Day to you too! I can't believe it is May already. This year is going way too fast.

    1. Thanks Kat! :) I agree, this year is going by way too fast. I hope the lazy days of summer here goes by at a much slower pace. That, or figure out how to add a few extra hours to the day without sacrificing sleep! ;)

  2. i'm such a shame to my nation. i don't celebrate vappu (or vpapu, as my fingers insist on typing) at all. i'm not really part of the target audience i guess. this year i gave myself full permission to stay in for the whole two days and eat cheesy poofs and knit and watch zombie movies while everyone else was out being all normal and vappu-esque and stuff. realizing the difference between how great it felt and how lame it must have seemed, i giggled.

i like your pictures though. and the fact that you've actually been here and experienced the whole thing, despite my personal aversion towards oh so many finnish idiosyncracies, is kind of awesome :D

    1. You're not a shame to your nation Liisa! I can see why you don't celebrate Vappu...for a while there I didn't celebrate half of the holidays that we have here, it's only because of my little one that I do. Like, I really didn't care for Easter (other than buying chocolate on the cheap the next day!), people here make a big deal about St Patrick's Day...not me. It's just another day to me. Brett and I don't even celebrate Valentine's Day really. And Victoria Day? Hell, it's a day named after the city I live in and I'm usually found inside my home wishing that the crowds outside my house would just go the eff away! So don't be ashamed! :)

As for me celebrating Vappu...hee hee...another reason for me to get insanely piss drunk for 3 days straight while being an erasmus student! ;)
